An Eventful Year for Businesses, and Another One to Come

Insights from the ADP Research Institute® annual study of midsized business owners A lot can change in a year. This has been particularly true of the past 12 months, in which we’ve seen several upheavals and major shifts in business, government and public life. In 2017, much uncertainty remains. A new ADP Research Institute study,”Midsized Businesses Poised to Lose Balance in Time of Uncertainty,”surveyed 756 midsized business owners, C-suite executives and senior level executives about their experience and plans looking forward. The annual report points to the fact that U.S. businesses staffing between 50-999 workers are still taking a wait-and-see approach to business practices that could, over time, lead to weaknesses in strong or strengthening companies. Why focus on the middle market? Because midsized businesses play a key role in the economy in terms of job volume and revenue. The Center for Middle Market Research asserts that “if the U.S. middle market were a country, its GDP (gross domestic product) would rank it as the fifth largest economy in...

Why the Candidates You Reject Are Just as Important as the Ones You Hire

By Liz Gelb-O’Connor, VP Global Employer Brand & Marketing, ADP Employer branding can be a tricky thing in today’s increasingly noisy communications market. Companies no longer have the luxury of keeping a tight grip on the public’s perception. Where businesses were once able to largely control their own reputation through public communications, in the digital age, employer brand is much more intricate and complicated. Websites like Glassdoor and Indeed have democratized information on salary, culture, and overall workplace experience. Meanwhile, social media has proliferated wider public conversation and interaction with all businesses and brands. Many companies know these things, and often, they will focus on ensuring great brand experience for clients, consumers and employees. However, one demographic can easily be forgotten: job candidates. The need to provide a successful candidate experience is three-fold. First, the ever-increasing war for talent demands companies put their best foot forward in order to secure top candidates. Second, companies then need to keep their promises – ADP’s recent study Evolution of Work 2.0 found...

Ever since she was a teenager, Cassie Fishkin dreamed of owning a restaurant – a comfortable, informal little place where people could gather for long conversations and healthy food. She told herself it would be her “retirement” career after she’d succeeded as an attorney. She never imagined her passion to be a restaurateur would outweigh her desire to practice law. Once she’d made that life-changing decision, however, Fishkin bought into a restaurant partnership and began honing a new set of skills. She rotated through every position, learning the nuances and challenges of restaurant management. She combined her business acumen and creativity, and realized that she’d finally found her professional niche. In 2015, she also realized her dream when she opened the doors of her bistro, The Spot, in Montclair, N.J. At first catering to walk-in, take-out and delivery business, the restaurant grew to accommodate patrons who wanted to sit and linger over their meals. With this growth, as most small business owners learn, came myriad day-to-day challenges that absorbed...
