Insights from the ADP Research Institute® annual study of midsized business owners A lot can change in a year. This has been particularly true of the past 12 months, in which we’ve seen several upheavals and major shifts in business, government and public life. In 2017, much uncertainty remains. A new ADP Research Institute study,”Midsized Businesses Poised to Lose Balance in Time of Uncertainty,”surveyed 756 midsized business owners, C-suite executives and senior level executives about their experience and plans looking forward. The annual report points to the fact that U.S. businesses staffing between 50-999 workers are still taking a wait-and-see approach to business practices that could, over time, lead to weaknesses in strong or strengthening companies. Why focus on the middle market? Because midsized businesses play a key role in the economy in terms of job volume and revenue. Ellen Feeney, Vice President, Counsel, Global Compliance at ADP, examined pay equity and its importance for today’s employers in her presentation to Argyle’s CHRO membership at the 2017 Human Capital Leadership Forum in New York on May 4. In her presentation, “Creating Pay Equity in the Workplace: What’s the Impact to Employers?” Feeney discussed the benefits of pay equity and its strategic impact on employers. According to Feeney, pay equity laws vary around the globe. Regardless, organizations must comply with these laws at all times. Many pay equity laws don’t have a financial penalty associated with them. However, the damage that an organization could suffer if it fails to comply with pay equity laws may extend beyond its bottom line. New Law Affects NYC Freelance Contracts

If you do business with an independent contractor working from New York City, there is a new law that applies to the relationship, effective May 15, 2017. This affects everyone who contracts with any of the estimated 4 million freelance workers in NYC. The New York City Freelance Isn’t Free Act (FIFA) makes it easier for freelance workers and independent contractors to collect payment. It also comes with hefty penalties for anyone who does not get agreements in writing and pay on time. To whom does the law apply? FIFA applies to individuals doing work as independent contractors in New York City. It includes individuals or organizations with no more than one employee that provide services in exchange for compensation. It does not matter whether the hiring person or organization is located in New York City. It excludes sales representatives, attorneys, and licensed health care workers. What contracts are covered?
