Big Data: The Key to Diversity in the Workplace

Big Data: The Key to Diversity in the Workplace

Ahu Yildirmaz, Ph.D. Vice President, ADP Research Institute

At ADP, we know that diversity fuels workplace innovation. We also have the data to tell the real story about workplace diversity. That’s why yesterday, we proudly sponsored Data Science and Data Architecture at ADP, an event hosted in conjunction with the NYC Women in Machine Learning and Data Science. Along with our principal data scientist Xiaojing Wang, I joined this community of women pursuing passions for data and machine learning for a provocative talk and engaging discussion. Big data is more than just numbers – it has the power to move the labor market and impact economic policy. Highlighting the ADP Research Institute’s Workforce Vitality Report, I chatted with the audience about how ADP is turning big data into actionable data. Our Workforce Vitality Report, a quarterly measure of wage growth based on the real payroll data of 24 million Americans paid by ADP, provides critical insights on labor market dynamics as well as benchmarks to measure human capital management for individual companies. The WVR sheds light on...

Why Empowering End Users Is Good For Business

Why Empowering End Users Is Good For Business

By Scott Groenendal, ADP Senior Director of Product Marketing You might think that linking user experience to the success of your business is a leap. I beg to differ. When employees are empowered with self-service HR tools and a customized user experience, they save time, are more engaged and become more productive. Think about it. What do your employees care about? They want the power to manage their careers, schedule time off, access their payroll information, and easily make benefits selections without depending on someone else to answer their HR questions. They want self-service tools that enable them to take action on their own. This is especially true for employees of multinational corporations. How frustrating would it be to have to call an HR help desk or call center where you may experience time zone, language and other cultural barriers that make it even harder to get your HR questions answered? Today’s global workforce doesn’t want to deal with an intermediary to get answers. They want interactive and visually...

Then and Now: Evolution Comes in Waves for HR Technology

Then and Now: Evolution Comes in Waves for HR Technology

Long before cloud computing and mobile apps, HR was consistently inundated with piles of paperwork. But with the evolution of HR technology influenced by the internet, recruitment, record keeping and payroll responsibilities have become drastically simplified, efficient and accurate. Jerome Gouvernel, Vice President for ADP’s Product Incubation Group located in Innovation Labs, explains how HR technology has grown from the dawn of the internet to today and gives us a look into the future. Q: How has the evolution of HR technology changed since before the internet? A: How has it not changed? The advancement of HR technology created a fundamental shift from the purpose of transactional recording. When the ADPs and PeopleSofts [of the world] started coming out and being successful, it was really about recording transactions in a standardized manner. Which at the time was revolutionary, because there was actually no way to standardize a new hire. There was no single place where you could transmit information about a new hire. There were multiple systems or a...

SHRM: A Tale of Two Cities Where Big Data Meets HR Meat and Potatoes

SHRM: A Tale of Two Cities Where Big Data Meets HR Meat and Potatoes

Don Weinstein, Senior Vice President, Product Management

Reflecting on my experiences at the most recent SHRM® Annual Conference and Exposition reminds me of the classic novel “A Tale of Two Cities.” On the one hand, today’s HR leaders are immersed in a technological revolution consisting of disruptive and innovative new solutions. On the other hand, those same leaders are managing through an unprecedented wave of compliance challenges. More than 15,000 attendees were encouraged to “Find Your BreaktHRough Moment” in Washington, D.C., by gaining insights from sessions on topics, such as analytics and benchmarking, talent management, benefit services, mobile solutions, time and labor management, multinational solutions, tax and compliance, and pay card solutions. Of those, more than 2,400 visited the ADP booth where we conducted more than 300 solution demos. It’s always fascinating to observe the rate and pace of change in the HR industry and its appetite for adopting new technology. But while clients are striving for innovation, the Affordable Care Act, the Fair Labor Standards Act, and other related compliance challenges were also top of...

Why ADP IS Doing Behavioral Economics

Why ADP IS Doing Behavioral Economics

By Jerome Gouvernel, Vice President, ADP Think about the last performance and workplace review cycle you went through. If you’re in HR, you probably spent months preparing for it, developing targeted employee survey questions and strategizing ways to make sure that people actually responded to those questions. If you’re not in HR, you probably walked away from the annual performance review feeling like it made you less productive—you’re not alone, a CEB study found that 66 percent of employees feel the performance review process interferes with their productivity[1]. But regardless of the role you play in your organization, you probably felt you spent too much time asking questions like “where is that dropdown menu where I can input a goal?” and not enough time thinking “so how am I going to improve areas in which I’m struggling?” We don’t (always) need another app. We need more solutions. Most of us have seen it firsthand. Too often, we (or our organizations) buy or build HR technology without considering the real...
