Why ADP IS Doing Behavioral Economics

Why ADP IS Doing Behavioral Economics

By Jerome Gouvernel, Vice President, ADP Think about the last performance and workplace review cycle you went through. If you’re in HR, you probably spent months preparing for it, developing targeted employee survey questions and strategizing ways to make sure that people actually responded to those questions. If you’re not in HR, you probably walked away from the annual performance review feeling like it made you less productive—you’re not alone, a CEB study found that 66 percent of employees feel the performance review process interferes with their productivity[1]. But regardless of the role you play in your organization, you probably felt you spent too much time asking questions like “where is that dropdown menu where I can input a goal?” and not enough time thinking “so how am I going to improve areas in which I’m struggling?” We don’t (always) need another app. We need more solutions. Most of us have seen it firsthand. Too often, we (or our organizations) buy or build HR technology without considering the real...

Making Vacation Less Taboo Among Employees

Making Vacation Less Taboo Among Employees

By Maria Black, President, ADP TotalSource® Once standard among American families, summer vacations no longer appear as an annual event on many calendars. Recent studies show that many employees leave vacation days on the table. For those who do take a break, many feel shame for taking time off. Fifty-five percent of workers surveyed left vacation days unused in 2015, totaling 658 million days, according to a study commissioned by Project: Time Off. Of those, 222 million days could not be rolled over or paid out in any way – which means Americans forfeited $61.4 billion in benefits. What’s holding Americans back from taking the vacation days they’ve earned? Guilt plays a large role. Research from Alamo Rent A Car found that 47 percent of all workers surveyed feel a sense of shame or guilt at their workplace for taking a vacation. This sentiment is even stronger among Millennials at 59 percent. And Millennials aren’t just feeling guilty – they’re dishing it out, too. Forty-two percent also shame their...

Controlling Costs Under the New Overtime Rules

Controlling Costs Under the New Overtime Rules

Recent changes to the nation’s overtime pay rules will make 4.2 million currently exempt workers eligible for overtime pay. According to the U.S. administration, the Department of Labor’s (DOL) changes will help grow middle-class wages and put $12 billion in the pockets of U.S. workers over the next 10 years. Complying with these sweeping changes means businesses will have to spend more in payroll, administrative and legal fees. So what can you do to help your business control costs? Meg Ferrero, Vice President and Assistant General Counsel of ADP’s Major Accounts division shares some tips with FEI. Read more here. ADP National Employment Report Celebrates 10 Years

ADP National Employment Report Celebrates 10 Years

Over the past decade, the U.S. labor market has undergone a variety of changes. We’ve endured a historic recession followed by nearly seven years of recovery and expansion. It has taken 10 years for the labor market to attain full employment again. For the last five years, average monthly job growth has been just about 200K. There’s evidence that wage growth is picking up, consistent with the idea that we’re getting pretty close to full employment. 2016 marks the 10th anniversary of the launch of the ADP National Employment Report®, an essential tool measuring the monthly change in U.S. nonfarm private employment which is distributed free to the public. Since its inception in 2006, the NER has informed the conversation around the economy, become a critical indicator of private sector labor market activity and emerged as a reliable predictor of the government’s jobs report. Using actual, anonymous payroll information of 24 million Americans, ADP is able to draw conclusions about the workforce based on real numbers, not survey data....

Cultivating Top Talent – American workers are our greatest asset

Cultivating Top Talent – American workers are our greatest asset

Maria Black, President, ADP TotalSource Last week I had the pleasure of participating in a panel on “Cultivating Top Talent” for the SelectUSA Summit. This event — which took place in Washington, D.C. — hosted more than 2,000 global companies, economic development organizations from every corner of the United States, high-level government officials, and others working together to facilitate investment in the United States. There were many things I found quite interesting about this experience, but none more impactful than President Barack Obama’s keynote address. It was a self-proclaimed “sales pitch” about why now more than ever America continues to be the place to invest for many reasons. The top reason I took away, likely since I too consider it to be our country’s greatest asset, is American workers. Here is a brief excerpt from his speech: “If you could choose any place and time to invest your business’s precious resources, I believe you’d choose right here, right now. If you choose a place to expand your portfolio, to...
